Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM)

Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM) are institutional visits aimed at supporting individual mobility, fostering collaboration between individuals.

STSM – ELIGIBILITY RULES

STSM applicants must be engaged in an official research program as a PhD Student or postdoctoral fellow or can be employed by, or affiliated to, an institution, organization or legal entity which has within its remit a clear association with performing research. The institution / organization or legal entity where applicants pursue their main strand of research is considered as the Home institution. The Host institution is the institution / organization that will host the successful applicant. The applicant must be an SWST member. The host must be a senior researcher and SWST member.

The institutional visits must be performed at a host institution on a different continent (for example USA applicant visit research institution in Europe or Asia).

Additional Call for STSM Applications!  We have funds to support 1 additional STSM Applicant for 2022.

Eligible STSM applicant must submit their STSM application to the SWST Executive Director  (execdir@dev.swst.org) by May 1, 2024.  Approval given by May 15, 2024.

The application must include:

  • CV of the applicant
  • Motivation letter including justification of the need; how the STSM will benefit the applicant’s work and/or discipline
  • Supportive home institution approval letter
  • Supportive host institution approval and the host name
  • Foreseen dates of the STSM
  • Plan of work and specific deliverables from the STSM visit

EVALUATION AND SELECTION OF APPLICANTS

The evaluation of each received STSM application is performed by the SWST Board of Directors.

The selection of successful STSM applicants must be done in consideration of the scientific scope of the proposed mission and how it supports the mission  of SWST  to develop, maintain, and promulgate the educational, scientific, and ethical standards that define the profession; and to advocate the socially responsible production and use of wood and lignocellulosic materials.

Special considerations shall be made promoting gender balance, enabling Early Career Investigators (ECI), and broadening geographical inclusiveness.

CRITERIA FOR STSM

STSM must respect the following criteria:

  • Minimum visit duration of 5 calendar days
  • Maximum visit duration of 14 calendar days
  • STSM grantees must make their own arrangements for all provisions related to personal security, health and health insurance, taxation, social security and pension matters
  • Must have wood/bioproducts related expertise
  • Clear motivation to conduct proposed work

STSM – FINANCIAL SUPPORT

An STSM Grant is a fixed financial contribution which takes into consideration the budget request of the applicant and the outcome of the evaluation of the STSM application. STSM Grants do not necessarily cover all expenses related to undertaking a given mission. A STSM Grant is a contribution toward the overall travel, accommodation and meal expenses of the Grantee. The amount of the financial contribution for each STSM is decided by the SWST Board. Maximum of $2,500 can be awarded to each successful applicant.

APPROVING STSM FOR PAYMENT

The STSM Grantee has 30 calendar days from the end date of the mission to submit a scientific report and material for Social Media to the SWST Executive Director, Angela Haney (execdir@dev.swst.org), and to the senior researcher affiliated with the host institution.  Payment of the Grant is subject to the approval of the scientific report by the SWST Board of Directors and by a senior researcher affiliated with the host institution.
