Dr. Zeki Candan, SWST member and Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa Department of Forest Products Engineering Faculty member was selected as a The Young Scientists Award Programme (GEBIP) member as a result of an evaluation among many highly qualified scientists. Dr. Zeki Candan will hold the title of Turkish Academy of Sciences-Young Academy Member. He received the award from the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic at the official ceremony held at Bestepe People’s Convention and Culture Center in Ankara.
Launched in 2001, this award programme is one of the first of its kind in the world. The objective of Turkish Academy of Sciences-The Young Scientists Award Programme is to foster young, outstanding scientists who are at the stage of establishing their own research programmes in Turkey after finishing their post-doctoral research activities. Turkish Academy of Sciences supports these scientists for a period of three years and helps them set up their own research groups at a stage when they are in need for incentives. In this way Turkish Academy of Sciences tries to contribute to develop a new generation of competent researchers from all disciplines, including social sciences and humanities, basic sciences and health sciences. Turkish Academy of Sciences considers itself as a school to train young promising academicians.
Dr. Zeki Candan completed bachelor’s degree in Forestry Industrial Engineering, Istanbul University, as a 2nd in 2003. He completed master’s studies in 2007 and his PhD studies in 2012 at Istanbul University Department of Forestry Industrial Engineering. During master and PhD, he visited many universities and research institutions in the USA, Canada, Sweden, England, Germany, and China conducted scientific research. He has carried out scientific studies with the world’s leading scientists in the field.
These include The University of Maine, Advanced Structures & Composites Center – ASCC, which is referred to as the world’s largest laboratory in composite materials/biomaterials/renewable energy is located in the USA. Dr. Candan also worked in the private sector between 2005 and 2006, taking on the role of Secretary Turkish Wood Based Panels Association.
Dr. Zeki Candan has carried out numerous qualified international scientific articles, papers, projects, patents and industry studies on the application of nanocomposites/bionanocomposites, biomaterials, applications of nanotechnology in furniture/wood/resin industry, bioadhesives, Industry 4.0, smart products, bioenergy, thermal characterization of materials (DMTA, TMA, TGA, DTA, DSC), and applications of biomaterials in the field of medicine.
Dr. Candan, who made his first doctorate studies on the applications of nanotechnology in the wood industry in Turkey, also he made significant contributions in the establishment of the first Nanotechnology Laboratory and Thermal Analysis Laboratory which conducts research in the fields mentioned in Turkey. Dr. Candan continues research with R&D and innovation group named NanoTeam. His R&D and innovation studies; it contributes to the development of furniture components with its environmentally friendly, high-performance, durable wood/wood-based composites with reduced formaldehyde emission, antibacterial, dimensional stabilization high, high resistance to fire and biological factors. On the other hand, R&D and innovation studies are continuing on the applications of lignocellulosic bionanomaterials such as nanocellulose and nanolignin in the fields of medical, pharmaceutical, energy, composite, food, electronics.
